convincer blind spot — The Successful Mind Podcast Episode 745

The Convincer Blind Spot: Why Pushing Harder Backfires

The convincer blind spot might be the reason you’re doing everything the sales books tell you to do and still hearing no. I’ve coached thousands of salespeople who know every feature and benefit of what they sell, and still watch deals fall apart, because they’re pushing for a yes instead of listening for the truth.

Convincer Blind Spot: Where the Pattern Begins

This pattern runs on a belief that sounds reasonable: if you make a good enough case, the person will buy. So you gather every fact, expecting the evidence alone to close the deal. But people don’t buy because of your argument. They buy for their own reasons, once they feel understood. A great salesperson talks a fraction of the time their prospect does. If you’re doing most of the talking in a sales conversation, that’s the clearest sign this blind spot is running the show.

Convincer Blind Spot: Three Places It Shows Up In A Sales Conversation

The first is pushback. The moment a prospect hesitates, instead of asking a question, you pile on more reasons and urgency, mistaking volume for persuasion. The second is selling the wrong thing. I once sat across from a car salesman who walked me through engine specs and trim packages while I sat there wanting heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and decent cupholders. He never asked what I wanted, so he never had a chance to sell it to me. The third is desperation. When you’re worried about payroll, you push harder for the yes, and prospects feel that energy before you say a word.

The Story That Changed How I Sell

Every salesperson who pushes a prospect into a yes eventually pays for it. Buyer’s remorse and refund requests run far higher on convinced sales than on sales made through genuine understanding. People say yes to relieve pressure, not because they wanted what you sold them. I bought a timeshare in my twenties under exactly that kind of pressure, and decades later, I still own it. The sale you win by pushing is rarely the sale you keep.

The Real Cost, And Where To Start

The shift starts with an honest question: do you want to be right, or do you want to be rich? Convincing feels like effort, but sales was never about effort. It’s about listening. Next time a prospect pushes back, ask what’s behind the hesitation, and find out what they want before you say another word about what you’re selling. What you put into a conversation has a way of coming back to you.

This is the fourth episode in our Sales Blind Spot series, and it’s one I wish someone had explained to me decades ago. Steph and I dig into where the convincer blind spot comes from and how to catch yourself in the moment.

HERE’S THE TRUTH: YOUR BUSINESS ISN’T BROKEN. YOUR MINDSET IS.

You’ve built something real. You’ve got clients, revenue, maybe even a team. But every morning, you wake up feeling like you’re pushing a boulder uphill — working harder for smaller wins, watching others leap ahead while you grind in place.

This September, I’m opening the doors to The Elite Mind, a proven daily practice that rewires the mental patterns keeping you stuck in the feast-or-famine cycle, and transforms your relationship with success from the inside out.

We’ll strip away the self-sabotage, the fear of your own potential, and the unconscious limits you’ve accepted as “just how business is.” You’ll discover why strategy alone never works (and what actually does), and walk away with the mental framework that separates those who sustain success from those who chase it forever.

Ready to stop working harder and start thinking differently?
