The Successful Mind Podcast – Episode 338 – My Three Friends

One of the most important things we could learn in life is how to pick good friends.

Most people, when they’re raised as children, don’t ever get a solid understanding of how to evaluate the relationships we take on in life. Most of us don’t know how to evaluate the character of people in our life, or what role they’re meant to play. This causes us to make errors in bringing certain people into our life.

For us to move forward, we need other people. There’s no such thing as a “self-made man” or “self-made woman.”  That’s total BS. Nobody is self-made. We all need relationships. We need relationships with people who are better than us, who know more than us.

We’re also going to have relationships with people who don’t know as much as we do, and we’re going to help them. We’ll have intimate relationships, friendships, and relationships with people we don’t even know as we go through life.

If we don’t know how to discern the basic character of why people come into our life, not only can we set ourselves up for a big fall, but there could also be hurt feelings on the opposite side of this.

In today’s episode, I’m drawing on the wisdom of Reverend TD Jakes , a well-known minister out of Houston, Texas. I’ve been listening to him for a long time. Today’s episode is based on one of his 30-minute Sunday sermons that really stuck with me.

We need to understand that there are 3 types of important people who will come into our life: confidants, constituents, and comrades. Understanding the foundation of each relationship  will help us know how to survive as an adult. Very often, we think a relationship is something that it’s actually not. And that’s where we set ourselves up for disappointment and hurt feelings.

By understanding these 3 types of people, knowing your friends, and keeping them in the right context of what relationships are supposed to look like in your life—you’ll save yourself a lot of pain. You’ll also have big wins in the future.
