Being your word is the compass I’ve built my life around, and this week I want to show you why it matters more than any goal you’re chasing. Yesterday, more than one person texted me already deciding they wouldn’t hit their goal. That sentence told me everything about their sabotage pattern.
Being Your Word Starts With Noticing Your Sabotage Pattern
When you announce ahead of time that something isn’t going to work, that isn’t honesty — it’s your sabotage pattern doing exactly what it’s built to do. It searches for evidence you’ll agree with, and the moment you agree, you stop trying. That’s not faith. That’s faith in what you don’t want. I’m not saying this with judgment; I’m saying it to wake you up to an unconscious expectation you may not know you’re carrying. Once you see it, you can change it. I missed more deadlines than I hit for years, simply because I hadn’t noticed the pattern.
Being Your Word Means You Stop Negotiating With Fear
Most of us learned to stop where the world tells us to stop. We hit a gatekeeper, hear one no, and quietly agree that’s the end of the road. Early in my career I sold health products to doctors — a high school dropout with no business getting in front of highly educated professionals — so I waited in parking lots to catch them walking to their cars. Nothing stopped me, because I’d already decided the outcome. Being your word in that season meant refusing to let someone else’s comfort define my ceiling.
Recruit Up: A Lesson From Bob Proctor on Reaching Higher
One piece of advice changed the trajectory of my income: recruit up. Bob Proctor said it from a stage years ago, and I’ve applied it to everything since — worth roughly a hundred million dollars in earnings over three decades. Instead of climbing from the bottom, I went straight to the people with the most influence and served them first. One relationship in the right room did more than months of working the phones ever could. If you’re stuck on what people will pay you, ask where you’re stopping.
The Day Being Your Word Became Non-Negotiable
Before 1998, I never paid a bill on time. I had the money, but I was always working the system, always juggling. Then I met a man who paid his bills once a year, and it reframed everything for me. I made a decision that day — I will never again pay a bill late — and I haven’t, except for one honest bookkeeping error. That decision taught me the difference between it should happen and it must happen. Stop negotiating with your own word and your energy changes.
None of this works from fear, and none of it works halfway. Being your word is a decision you make once and defend every day, especially when your sabotage pattern shows up with a convincing story. Notice where you’re stopping. Notice the evidence you’ve been collecting. Then decide, out loud if you have to, that it must happen.
YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD BE CLOSING MORE SALES…
SO WHY DO TOO MANY OF YOUR CONVERSATIONS STILL END WITH “I NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT”?
You can have a great offer, know you can help the person sitting across from you, and still lose the sale because you can’t see where your own thinking is taking you out of the conversation.
That’s your Sales Blind Spot. It can show up when you hesitate to ask for the sale, back off when you hear an objection, over-explain or try to convince, or miss what the prospect is really telling you.
That’s what we’ll work on at The Elite Mind: Sales Accelerator in Charlotte, November 10–11. Over two focused days, you’ll learn how to lead when the conversation gets uncomfortable, ask the right questions that bring the truth to the surface, handle objections without freezing or over-explaining, and guide a prospect to a clear decision without pushing, chasing, or forcing the sale.
If you’re ready to turn your Sales Blind Spot into your next revenue breakthrough, you don’t want to miss this: Apply here to join us.
