The reluctant seller blind spot might be the reason you’re not closing sales already sitting in front of you. I’ve coached this pattern in thousands of people, and it rarely looks like laziness. It looks like someone who doesn’t want to bother anyone — who has quietly decided selling is something you do to a person, not for one.
Reluctant Seller Blind Spot: Selling Feels Like Doing Something To Someone
This one starts early. I was raised to believe every salesperson had an angle, that selling was something slippery people did to unsuspecting people. So when I started my own business, my unconscious mind treated selling as a moral problem before it ever became a skill problem. That’s the core of this pattern: a conflict between wanting to be a good person and needing to sell to build the life you want. Your mind can’t hold both at once without flinching, so it flinches toward avoidance and calls it politeness.
The Value Conflict Behind Every Missed Follow-Up
This blind spot shows up first in the follow-up you never make. I’ve sat across from clients holding stacks of business cards and inbound inquiries they never returned, insisting there weren’t enough leads. There were. They couldn’t reach out again without feeling like a bother. The same avoidance shows up when you wait for referrals instead of asking directly, as if asking were rude. It isn’t.
Reluctant Seller Blind Spot: Why You Accept No Too Easily
The second place this pattern hides is in how fast you accept no. Early in my career, a couple I knew turned down a product I was certain would help their aging dog. I backed off, because pushing felt like doing something to them. A mentor asked me one question — what if you’re not pushing because you don’t want it badly enough — and it stopped me cold. I went back, and they bought. No rarely means no. It usually means not yet. You can’t stop where they stop.
You Were Born a Salesperson
The third place this shows up is the sentence “I’m just not a sales person.” I hear it from owners who hand off selling to someone else, then wonder why growth stalls. But every one of us sold before we could talk — that’s how a baby gets fed with no language at all. Somewhere along the way, most of us got shamed out of asking directly for what we need. That instinct isn’t gone. It’s buried under rules about politeness that were never yours to keep in a sales conversation.
None of this means something is wrong with you. It means you’re carrying values built for a different life, due for an update now. I walk through where this pattern started, and how to reprogram it, in this episode — the second in our Sales Blind Spot series. Be sure to access the Sales Blindspot Detector HERE!
HERE’S THE TRUTH: YOUR BUSINESS ISN’T BROKEN. YOUR MINDSET IS.
You’ve built something real. You’ve got clients, revenue, maybe even a team. But every morning, you wake up feeling like you’re pushing a boulder uphill — working harder for smaller wins, watching others leap ahead while you grind in place.
This September, I’m opening the doors to The Elite Mind, a proven daily practice that rewires the mental patterns keeping you stuck in the feast-or-famine cycle, and transforms your relationship with success from the inside out.
We’ll strip away the self-sabotage, the fear of your own potential, and the unconscious limits you’ve accepted as “just how business is.” You’ll discover why strategy alone never works (and what actually does), and walk away with the mental framework that separates those who sustain success from those who chase it forever.
