If you want to stop self-sabotaging your goals, you first have to see that the thing stopping you doesn’t look like sabotage. It looks like real life: the call that never comes back, the car that breaks down, the bill you can’t cover. I call it the sabotage pattern, and I’ve watched it stall more good people than any lack of talent.
Stop Self-Sabotaging Your Goals by Seeing the Pattern
Your subconscious mind runs your life on autopilot. The moment you introduce a goal that contradicts your beliefs or stored experiences, it notices the deviation and goes to work. It rarely attacks you head on. Instead, it hands you problems outside yourself. Today it’s the cat at the emergency vet. Tomorrow it’s the refrigerator. Saturday it’s a fight at home. Every one of those problems is real, which is exactly why this is so seductive. While you’re handling them, fifty calls a day quietly becomes ten.
The Moment You Agree With Why You Can’t
Here’s the clincher. The pattern doesn’t just distract you. It gets your agreement. You can’t pay the bill on time, so you tell yourself you’ll make more next week. In that moment your subconscious just won, because you reinforced your current set point. Underneath that is something most people never admit: once you break through, you lose your valid reason why you can’t. The excuse protects you, and it also steals your dream. That sale is there. The person who wants to work with you already exists, and it’s your job to find them.
Stop Self-Sabotaging Your Goals by Keeping Your Word
In 1998 I had nothing. No sales, no list of people to call. I decided I would never again accept “they’re not there” as an excuse, and I haven’t paid a bill late since. I knocked on doors, called people all day, and asked everyone for referrals. Being my word became my number one value. That standard is what carries you through the next barrier when every one of your senses insists nothing is there.
Why a New Experience Changes Everything
There is no permanent change without a new experience. You can write your goal down a hundred times a day, but until you get the experience, the process isn’t complete. You weren’t confident you could walk until you walked. When you push through the resistance and find the sale anyway, your subconscious learns something new: you didn’t die. Next time the resistance is weaker, and the reprogramming happens fast.
Notice how much energy you spend with one foot in and one foot out. That’s where the struggle lives. When you go all in, forward becomes the only direction left. That decision is how you stop self-sabotaging your goals for good, and it’s what I unpack in this episode.
YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD BE CLOSING MORE SALES…
SO WHY DO TOO MANY OF YOUR CONVERSATIONS STILL END WITH “I NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT”?
You can have a great offer, know you can help the person sitting across from you, and still lose the sale because you can’t see where your own thinking is taking you out of the conversation.
That’s your Sales Blind Spot. It can show up when you hesitate to ask for the sale, back off when you hear an objection, over-explain or try to convince, or miss what the prospect is really telling you.
That’s what we’ll work on at The Elite Mind: Sales Accelerator in Charlotte, November 10–11. Over two focused days, you’ll learn how to lead when the conversation gets uncomfortable, ask the right questions that bring the truth to the surface, handle objections without freezing or over-explaining, and guide a prospect to a clear decision without pushing, chasing, or forcing the sale.
